Gratitude – A Primary Food

Want to know a simple secret to happiness?

 Yes, it’s really that simple.

It’s extremely beneficial to write down the things in your life for which you are grateful.  It can be as simple as a beautiful flower you saw on a walk or as profound as the love you have for your family. Instantly, you are in a new state of happiness and awareness of all your blessings.  Attempt this on a day that is particularly trying, it actually has the power to change the direction of your entire day!

I recently took part in a lecture given by Deepak Chopra, renown medical doctor and wellness guru.   If I may be so presumptuous as to summarize even a syllable of what he professed it would be this:

Most of us believe in a higher power.  Yet, we all must believe in our own spiritual beings.  To believe in this, we must agree that our souls are larger and more important than our human bodies.  If we accept this, we must agree that our bodies exist in our souls.  If this is true, our souls exist without the confinements of time or space.  Further, our souls, our energy, our spirits must intermingle with others.  When we do this, our intentions literally become other’s intentions and we receive the same in return.

Essentially, all the energy we put out into the world mixes up with all the energy that surrounds us and gives us back.  Maybe that’s over-simplifying it but it does lend credibility to the old adage that misery loves company.  Ever notice miserable people flock to miserable people?

What if we don’t feel gratitude? It’s hard to feel grateful when we are bogged down with day to day tasks.  I say fake it to you make it.  Put gratitude out to the world and see what comes back.  In other words, you will feel gratitude because what you are putting out into the world is coming back to you.  And when gratitude comes back to you, that’s when your own gratitude becomes real and heartfelt.  You will then surround yourself naturally with gracious people and find that happiness is not so elusive.  Try it, what is the worst thing that could happen?!
